APPRENTICE SELECTION STEPS

Applicants are selected on the basis of Education, Character and Physical Fitness. The JJATC/JAC Apprenticeship Program is an Affirmative Action Program in which women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

HOW TO APPLY:
Applicants are required to complete an application, in person, at the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration J.J.A.T.C. Office, 2220 South Hill Street, Los Angeles, CA 90007. Applications are accepted only Fridays 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. (With the exception of holidays)

AGE REQUIREMENT:
Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years. There is no maximum age.

FORMAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

1. A High School Graduation -or- GED certificate

2. And the following courses completed with a passing grade:

A. ALGEBRA and GEOMETRY –
One Full Year (10 credits, High School level) -or- One Semester (3 Units College level)

-OR-

B. A Certificate of Completion or Associate of Science degree in Air Conditioning & Refrigeration from a JJATC/JAC approved Community College, Trade or Tech School

-OR-

C. Achieve a passing score on a test written and administered by the JJATC/JAC that encompasses Algebra and Geometry. The test may be taken a maximum of two times.

SELECTION PROCESS:
Although applications are taken year round, the Selection Process is only held one time a year. Proof of the education prerequisites will allow a candidate to participate in the Selection Process. The first step is to take a test and all candidates must achieve a minimum of 60% to move on in the Selection Process. All candidates who attain 60% or better on the test are scheduled to interview before the Committee. Candidates who complete both the test and the interview are placed on a Waiting List. Candidates selected to enter the apprenticeship program are pulled from the Waiting List.

ON THE JOB and RELATED TRAINING:
Apprentices are required to complete a minimum of 216 hours per year related training instruction. Classes are scheduled two nights per week from 6 – 9 p.m., for a period of five years. Classes are held from September – June.

Apprentices are required to complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job training to qualify for a Journeyman Certificate from the United Association and the State of California Division of Apprenticeship Standards.
